The Craft of Freemasonry

Freemasonry is a school of character. Its teachers are symbols, and its classroom is a lodge of equals.

What a mason does

A mason takes a rough stone and shapes it. The stone is the self.

The Craft borrows its language from the builders of old. The square reminds a mason to act with rectitude. The compass reminds them to keep desire within bounds. The rough stone stands for what each of us is before the work, and the smooth stone for what we hope to become.

A mason also works with others. Members help each other, give to those in need and take part in the life of their city.

The three degrees

Each degree has its own ceremony and its own lessons. A member moves to the next degree when the lodge judges the member ready, not when a calendar says so.

The Entered Apprentice listens and learns to be silent. The Fellow Craft studies the arts and the sciences. The Master Mason takes responsibility for the work and for the others who share it.

We do not describe the ceremonies here. A candidate learns them in the lodge, and the surprise is part of the lesson.

Questions people ask first

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. It has no creed and no clergy. A member keeps their own faith or none. The lodge asks only for a belief in something greater than the self and for respect toward every belief.

Is it a secret society?

No. Our existence, our officers’ titles and our public events are open. Members may say they are masons. The ceremonies and the signs by which masons know each other stay private, as in many clubs.

Do you discuss politics or religion?

We do not take sides in party politics or in questions of creed. We study ideas, history and ethics, and we learn to disagree with courtesy.

Which language does the lodge use?

The lodge works in English, in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. You may write to us in English or in Greek.

What does it cost?

Members pay fees and a monthly contribution that the Grand Mixed Lodge sets. We explain every amount to a candidate before they decide.
