R S L Plato Nr. 2010

A symbolic lodge founded on 23 February 2006, in the East of Athens. We study the three degrees of the Craft, and we do it in company.

The archaeological park of Plato’s Academy in Athens.

Why the name Plato

Plato taught in a grove outside the walls of Athens. He asked his students to reason from first principles, and he asked them to learn geometry first.

The Craft uses the same tools. It teaches through the square, the compass and the rough stone, and it asks each member to work first on themselves. Our lodge carries the name as a promise to keep that habit: patient study, honest talk and respect for every view in the room.

Under the aegis of Delphi

R S L Plato works under the aegis of the International Masonic Order Delphi and the Grand Mixed Lodge of Greece.

The Grand Mixed Lodge governs the mixed symbolic lodges of Greece. They work in Athens, Chalkida, Thessaloniki, Chania, Heraklion, Volos and Rhodes. The Grand Mixed Lodge follows the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. It belongs to CLIPSAS and it is a founding member of the Mediterranean Masonic Union.

A National Grand Master leads the Grand Mixed Lodge. A Sovereign Grand Commander leads the Order. We follow the General Regulation of the Grand Mixed Lodge. It sets how a lodge is founded, how it elects its officers and how it admits a new member.

Who does what

We name our officers by their titles. A title stays with the office, and a member carries it for a year.

How a year of work looks

The masonic year runs from October to June. The Master sets a programme at the start of the year.

Most meetings are work sessions. In a work session one member presents a study, called a work, and the others answer it. Some meetings are ceremonies in which a candidate or a member passes to the next degree. The Master opens the year with an address and closes it with another.

Visit us

Guests are welcome at our open evenings. Visiting masons from a recognised obedience may attend our work after the Tyler has examined them.
