Mixed Freemasonry in Greece

The Craft opened its doors to women and men together more than a century ago. Our Order keeps that promise, and mixed Freemasonry in Greece marks its hundredth year.

Why a mixed order

A lodge opens its door to a person, not to a sex.

The Craft asks every member to work on their own character with the same tools. The tools do not depend on who holds them. A lodge where women and men work side by side hears more voices, and it tests its ideas against more experience.

A short history

  1. 1882

    Le Pecq, France

Maria Deraismes, a writer and a campaigner for women’s rights, is initiated in the lodge Les Libres Penseurs. Modern mixed Freemasonry begins with this act.

  2. 1893

    Paris

On 4 April, Maria Deraismes and Georges Martin found Le Droit Humain. It becomes the first international mixed order and admits women and men on the same terms.

  3. 1926

    Athens

The first Greek mixed lodge, Athena No. 815, is founded on 28 October and consecrated on 8 November. Greek women win the vote only in 1952, so the lodge is far ahead of its time.

  4. 1996

    Athens

On 14 December, the Greek lodges declare their independence. They found the International Masonic Order Delphi and re-found the Grand Mixed Lodge of Greece. At that time 34 lodges work in Greece, Romania and Bulgaria.

  5. 2026

    One hundred years

Mixed Freemasonry in Greece marks its centenary. Delphi lodges now work in Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, the United States and Brazil.

One hundred years, 1926–2026

The Order of Delphi works under a Sovereign Grand Commander and a Supreme Council. In Greece its lodges belong to the Grand Mixed Lodge, which elects a National Grand Master every three years.

We will publish the programme of the centenary here. It will list each public event and each paper as a PDF file. For the wider story, read the history on the website of the Grand Mixed Lodge.

Questions about mixed lodges

Can women become Freemasons in Greece? Do women and men work together in every degree?

Yes. In a mixed lodge in Greece, women and men take the same degrees, hold the same offices and vote with the same weight.

Is a mixed lodge recognised by others?

Many obediences across the world recognise us, and our members visit their lodges. Recognition between obediences rests on shared principles, and it grows through long contact.

Do the traditional symbols change in a mixed lodge?

No. The square, the compass, the rough stone and the three degrees stay the same. What changes is who stands in the room.
